The dust has settled after the French election race. It was a tough campaign by any standards. Even observers located outside France, like this author, couldn’t fail to notice this. Let’s analyse what happened, why it happened and what the future holds.

Jakob Augstein analysiert in einem sehr lesenswerten Artikel für die Spiegel Kolumne S.P.O.N – Im Zweifel links die Ergebnisse der Landtagswahl im Saarland, insbesondere das neuerliche Versagen der SPD. Die Zahlen sind tatsächlich ernüchternd. Trotz Stimmenzugewinn schaffte es die SPD zum wiederholten Male nicht, die CDU als stärkste Fraktion im neuen Landtag abzulösen (das Saarland ist traditionell eine sozialdemokratische Hochburg). Was sind die Gründe?

Deutschland – Gauck neuer Bundespräsident

Joachim Gauck wurde gestern von der Bundesversammlung zum elften Bundespräsidenten gewählt. Er war der einzige Kandidat mit Siegchancen. Alle Bundestagsfraktionen, mit Ausnahme die der Linken, unterstützten bereits im Vorfeld seine Kandidatur. Die bedauernswerte Beate Karlsfeld, Kandidatin ebendieser Abweichlerfraktion, füllte lediglich das Starterfeld auf. So konnte das Wahlergebnis nur “überwältigend” zu Gunsten Gaucks ausfallen. Er nahm, sichtlich gerührt und bewegt, die Wahl an. Der Mann ist am Ziel.

Elections in Russia and the media

Vladimir Putin secured a third term as President of Russia during last weeks presidential elections. The official count put him at 63.64% (results). This didn’t come as a surprise to anyone.

The dust has settled. The Irish electorate voted for change. Fine Gael (FG) and Labour (LAB) have formed a coalition government. Fianna Fáil (FF) and the Greens got a hammering. That are the facts. But what are the implications?
