Jakob Augstein analysiert in einem sehr lesenswerten Artikel für die Spiegel Kolumne S.P.O.N – Im Zweifel links die Ergebnisse der Landtagswahl im Saarland, insbesondere das neuerliche Versagen der SPD. Die Zahlen sind tatsächlich ernüchternd. Trotz Stimmenzugewinn schaffte es die SPD zum wiederholten Male nicht, die CDU als stärkste Fraktion im neuen Landtag abzulösen (das Saarland ist traditionell eine sozialdemokratische Hochburg). Was sind die Gründe?

USA – Payday for Apple’s shareholders

Apple announced the other day that it will pay a dividend to its shareholders. It could have been a company communication like millions of others, but it wasn’t. There is only one Apple, a hugely successful company that hasn’t paid out a single nickel for 16 years. It is understood that the cash pile has risen to about 100 billion dollar (the GDP of Ireland stood at 180 billion in 2011). 45 billion dollar will be made available for payment over 3 years. I have 2 questions regarding this announcement, the first is economical, the second rather ethical.

Deutschland – Gauck neuer Bundespräsident

Joachim Gauck wurde gestern von der Bundesversammlung zum elften Bundespräsidenten gewählt. Er war der einzige Kandidat mit Siegchancen. Alle Bundestagsfraktionen, mit Ausnahme die der Linken, unterstützten bereits im Vorfeld seine Kandidatur. Die bedauernswerte Beate Karlsfeld, Kandidatin ebendieser Abweichlerfraktion, füllte lediglich das Starterfeld auf. So konnte das Wahlergebnis nur “überwältigend” zu Gunsten Gaucks ausfallen. Er nahm, sichtlich gerührt und bewegt, die Wahl an. Der Mann ist am Ziel.

Greece and the EU – Democracy and Sovereignty

One of the main concerns of this blog has been the promotion and advocacy of democratic principles. Events need to be measured against them regardless where and when they have taken place. The way the sovereign debt crises in Greece has been dealt with poses lots of questions in this regard. One of them is whether or not Greek sovereignty has been violated.
